CrayonLabs was founded roughly six months ago by Nabeel and Mo, who met at a gym in Dubai about a year before deciding to build a company together. Both came in with prior startup experience — Nabeel has built companies in Silicon Valley and spent time inside Microsoft — and the two decided to bet on Dubai rather than the more obvious hubs they'd already worked in. The company's mandate is broad on paper: build, launch, and scale AI products. In practice, the first bet is narrow and deliberate — a tool built specifically for venture capital firms, designed to compress the kind of research work that traditionally eats up weeks of an associate's time.
"CrayonLabs didn't build a chatbot for recruiters — it built the research team that used to take six weeks, running in the background while you sleep."
A product built to prove itself
Rather than pitch a vision and raise the strength of the story, Nabeel and Mo built with the intention of showing revenue and usage first. The VC-focused tool — CrayonLabs' first shipped product — is meant to run continuously, doing diligence-style research work in the background rather than waiting for a prompt, so that by the time a VC team sits down, the six weeks of legwork is already done. That "show, don't pitch" instinct extends to how the founders talk about the market too: they're not dismissing AI bubble concerns outright, but they see the current froth as a natural feature of a genuine, structural shift rather than a reason to hold back on building.
Operating in a market with a high bar means CrayonLabs has had to compete on substance early — proving the product works and generates revenue before asking anyone to write a check. That approach, the founders say, has already changed who's paying attention to them, drawing interest from investors who can do more than fund the round.
A head start via Embark
From Nabeel, Co-founder: "I've built companies in Silicon Valley, I've been inside Microsoft — and I still can't understate how much the network and the quality of people around you changes what's possible. Embark gave us access to a caliber of connections and density you don't get by just showing up in the Valley on your own. Two weeks in, and we'd already had conversations that would've taken us months to land cold — the kind of shortcuts that only exist when someone's already opened the door for you."
With its first product close to launch, no funding round yet disclosed, and a founding story built on choosing substance over pitch, CrayonLabs is betting that revenue — not a deck — is what will ultimately win it the right investors.
